Arrangements for future conferences, conference reports and photos of ESSA’s conferences will be
featured here. Discussion around subjects raised at conference or about any issue which ED workers
feel is relevant can be featured on this page.
The next ESSA two day Conference will be held at Aston Business Centre, Birmingham on
Tuesday November 16th and Wednesday November 17th 2010.
The venue website can be found here: http://www.abs.aston.ac.uk/conferenceaston
If you were at our one day event in November 2009, please note that these dates are a change
from the ones discussed then.
A full programme and booking forms will be e-mailed to all members by mid-April, but following
popular demand there will definitely be an extended session on the working time directive and
associated health and safety issues.
We are aware that many Authorities are facing financial constraints and we will be pricing the
Conference at only a fraction more than the cost of the last two day event in 2008. The cost
of the speakers will be subsidised from membership income.
Please put this date in your diary now.

SEVENTH EMERGENCY SOCIAL SERVICES ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
Aston Business Centre - Birmingham
November 16th & 17th 2010
The seventh two day ESSA conference will be held on November 16th and 17th 2010 at Aston Business
School Conference Centre, Birmingham. Places are always popular at this event, and will be offered to
ESSA members first. This Conference continues to carry a degree of subsidy for delegates from those
Authorities who are fully paid up members of ESSA.
Following popular demand after our last event the Conference will concentrate on the legal, physical and
physiological issues associated with out of hours working and shift work.
Day 1 will be presented by two trainers, (Gareth Bownes and Philip Crosbie) from Eversheds a leading
international law firm, with a specialist employment law and training section. Gareth is an Associate in
their Human Resources Practice Group and specialises in employment and immigration law. Philip is a
Solicitor in the Regulatory Team of their Litigation and Dispute Management Group. Between them they
will look at issues surrounding the working time directive, lone working, health and safety issues and
corporate manslaughter. They will be able to tailor their presentations and discussions to the specific
issues facing Emergency Duty Team workers.
Day 2 will be presented by Dr Steven Lockley. Steven is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard
Medical School in Boston. With the Harvard Work Hours health and safety group, he has been involved
in studies around the impact of extended work hours on the health and safety of workers and the public.
At some point during the two days we will also hold a brief AGM, as required by our constitution.
We are confident that this year the topics will appeal to all our members as they are not specific to service
user based legislation, groups or geographic area. In addition these topics are not ones that you will
generally find provided for by your local authority.
