PURPOSE
The Emergency Social Services Association’s purpose is to bring together workers in
Emergency Duty and Out of Hours Social Care Services.
ESSA will promote the interests of Emergency Duty and Out of Hours Social Care Services.
ESSA is a national association established in 1997 and now representing over 100
Local Authority Emergency Duty Teams and Out of Hours Services throughout the United Kingdom.
Through its fully constituted and democratically elected committees at
national and regional levels ESSA seeks to:
Develop a national network of Emergency Duty and Out of Hours workers and managers.
Gather and disseminate information relevant to Emergency Duty and Out of Hours work.
Represent the Out of Hours agenda to relevant organisations, promote good practice in
Emergency Duty and Out of Hours Teams.
Develop close working links with regional and national bodies such as the Association of Directors
of Social Services, the Association of Directors of Social Work in Scotland. To include the forthcoming
Association of Directors of Children’s Services, Association of Directors of Adult Services, Association
of Directors of Social Services, CYMRU and the Association of Directors of Social Work in Scotland.
Provide advice for members as well as written practice and research papers from an out of hours
perspective in response to Government initiatives and Green Papers. Further professional
development of the Association’s members and provide opportunities for them to share knowledge,
skills and training.
Promote high standards of Out of Hours Social Care Services.
To encourage membership of the Association.
To publicise the work of the Association and promote the professional and public understanding of
Out of Hours Social Care Services.
Influence legislation and policy related, to out of hours’ social care, issues at local, regional and
national level. Seek to consider and influence matters affecting the provision of Out of Hours
Social Care Services as a consequence of changes, or intended changes in the provision of
services provided by agencies other than Local Authorities.

Membership Fees and Benefits
Full membership fee £150.00 per annum with effect from 1st January 2010
£25 per annum individual members and retired members (non-voting)
The fees are payable in advance on an annual basis
